Special weather statement in effect for:

• City of Edmonton – St. Albert – Sherwood Park

An intense cold front will sweep through the province today and tonight. As the front passes, gusty winds and a marked drop in temperatures can be expected. Daytime highs on Tuesday will be near or below freezing.

The cold air will also result in heavy snow for parts of western Alberta. The Rocky mountains and foothills regions could see significant snowfall accumulations Monday night and Tuesday.

A chilling change in the weather..

A low pressure system is developing in the Yukon and will move into the Northwest Territories tonight. Behind the low, an intense cold front will drop southward through Northern Alberta on Monday and through Southern Alberta by Tuesday morning. The gusty northerly winds behind the cold front will bring a twenty degree drop in temperatures with Tuesday highs below zero throughout the province.

Mixed precipitation will accompany the front starting with rain and changing quickly over to snow especially in southwestern Alberta. Amounts of 5 to 10 cm are forecast with possibly higher amounts of 20 cm along the foothills. As well, the Highways 93 Icefields Parkway could see 15 to 25 cm and a snowfall warning is in effect for the higher elevations. Heavy snow should taper off by Tuesday evening.

Prepare for quickly changing weather with gusty winds, poor visibilities in heavy snow and deteriorating driving conditions.

Widespread frost is expected again tonight across much of Alberta. There will be less cloud cover tonight across northern regions, leading to a hard freeze. In the south, cloud and falling snow will limit how much frost actually forms on outdoor surfaces, however, temperatures will be at or below zero degrees.

The frost advisory program for this year ends on September 30th.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to continue to form this evening. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
